What happens in your first BJJ class

What Happens in Your First BJJ Class? (Relax... Nobody Gets Thrown to the Lions!)

So...

You've booked your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.

Awesome!

Then, somewhere between clicking "Book Now" and arriving at the academy, your brain starts asking some interesting questions...

"Are they all black belts?"

"What if I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing?"

"What if I accidentally choke the instructor?"

(Trust us... that's not going to happen.)

The reality is your first class is much more relaxed, welcoming and enjoyable than most people expect.

Let's walk you through exactly what happens.

Step 1: You'll Be Welcomed

The moment you walk through the doors at Gracie Barra Hunter Valley, one of our instructors or team members will greet you.

We'll introduce ourselves, show you around the academy and answer any questions you have before class starts.

You're not expected to know any martial arts terminology or traditions.

We'll explain everything.

Step 2: We'll Get You Ready

Don't own a Gi?

No problem.

We'll loan you one for your trial class.

We'll show you how to put it on properly (yes, there is a right way!) and make sure you're comfortable before stepping onto the mats.

All you need to bring is:

  • A water bottle
  • Comfortable clothes to wear under the Gi
  • Thongs or slides for walking off the mats
  • A willingness to learn.

Leave the nerves at the door—we've got the rest covered.

Step 3: Meet Your Instructor

Before training begins, you'll meet the instructor running the class.

They'll explain what you'll be learning and answer any last-minute questions.

One thing you'll notice straight away is that our instructors aren't interested in showing how tough they are.

They're passionate about helping people learn.

Step 4: The Warm-Up

No military boot camp here.

Our warm-up is designed to prepare your body for training.

You'll move, stretch and learn some of the basic movements used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Don't worry if you can't do everything perfectly.

Neither could anyone else on their first day.

Step 5: Learn Real Technique

This is where the fun begins.

Your instructor will demonstrate one or two techniques, explaining each step in simple terms.

Then you'll practise with a partner.

Slowly.

No pressure.

No competition.

Most beginners are surprised by how technical Jiu-Jitsu is.

It's often described as "human chess" because it's all about timing, leverage and problem solving—not brute strength.

Step 6: Will I Have to Spar?

Probably not.

And if you do, it will only be when you're ready.

Many beginners simply drill techniques during their first class.

If you do experience live training, you'll be paired with an experienced student who understands you're new and is there to help you learn—not to "win."

Step 7: Ask Questions

One of the best parts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the community.

Everyone remembers being the new person.

You'll quickly discover that higher belts genuinely enjoy helping beginners improve.

So ask questions.

There are no silly ones.

(Except maybe, "Can I skip straight to black belt?")

Step 8: You'll Leave Feeling Accomplished

Will you remember every technique?

Definitely not.

Will you make a few mistakes?

Absolutely.

Will you probably leave with a smile on your face and already be thinking about your next class?

There's a very good chance.

Most people finish their first class saying the same thing...

"That wasn't nearly as scary as I expected."

What Should You Bring?

To make your first class as comfortable as possible, we recommend bringing:

  • A water bottle
  • A towel
  • Comfortable clothes to wear under the Gi
  • A positive attitude
  • An open mind.

We'll provide everything else you need.

Your Journey Starts Here

Walking through the door is often the hardest part.

Once you're on the mats, you'll realise Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn't about proving how tough you are.

It's about learning.

Growing.

Having fun.

Building confidence.

And becoming part of an incredible community.

At Gracie Barra Hunter Valley, we've helped hundreds of beginners take that very first step.

Now it's your turn.

Book your free trial class today and experience why so many adults across the Hunter Valley are discovering the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
