What Happens in Your First BJJ Class? (Relax... Nobody Gets Thrown to the Lions!)<\/h1>\r\nSo...\r\n\r\nYou've booked your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.\r\n\r\nAwesome!\r\n\r\nThen, somewhere between clicking \"Book Now\" and arriving at the academy, your brain starts asking some interesting questions...\r\n\r\n\"Are they all black belts?\"<\/em>\r\n\r\n\"What if I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing?\"<\/em>\r\n\r\n\"What if I accidentally choke the instructor?\"<\/em>\r\n\r\n(Trust us... that's not going to happen.)\r\n\r\nThe reality is your first class is much more relaxed, welcoming and enjoyable than most people expect.\r\n\r\nLet's walk you through exactly what happens.\r\n

Step 1: You'll Be Welcomed<\/h2>\r\nThe moment you walk through the doors at Gracie Barra Hunter Valley, one of our instructors or team members will greet you.\r\n\r\nWe'll introduce ourselves, show you around the academy and answer any questions you have before class starts.\r\n\r\nYou're not expected to know any martial arts terminology or traditions.\r\n\r\nWe'll explain everything.\r\n

Step 2: We'll Get You Ready<\/h2>\r\nDon't own a Gi?\r\n\r\nNo problem.\r\n\r\nWe'll loan you one for your trial class.\r\n\r\nWe'll show you how to put it on properly (yes, there is a right way!) and make sure you're comfortable before stepping onto the mats.\r\n\r\nAll you need to bring is:\r\n
    \r\n \t
  • A water bottle<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Comfortable clothes to wear under the Gi<\/li>\r\n \t
  • Thongs or slides for walking off the mats<\/li>\r\n \t
  • A willingness to learn.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nLeave the nerves at the door\u2014we've got the rest covered.\r\n

    Step 3: Meet Your Instructor<\/h2>\r\nBefore training begins, you'll meet the instructor running the class.\r\n\r\nThey'll explain what you'll be learning and answer any last-minute questions.\r\n\r\nOne thing you'll notice straight away is that our instructors aren't interested in showing how tough they are.\r\n\r\nThey're passionate about helping people learn.\r\n

    Step 4: The Warm-Up<\/h2>\r\nNo military boot camp here.\r\n\r\nOur warm-up is designed to prepare your body for training.\r\n\r\nYou'll move, stretch and learn some of the basic movements used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.\r\n\r\nDon't worry if you can't do everything perfectly.\r\n\r\nNeither could anyone else on their first day.\r\n

    Step 5: Learn Real Technique<\/h2>\r\nThis is where the fun begins.\r\n\r\nYour instructor will demonstrate one or two techniques, explaining each step in simple terms.\r\n\r\nThen you'll practise with a partner.\r\n\r\nSlowly.\r\n\r\nNo pressure.\r\n\r\nNo competition.\r\n\r\nMost beginners are surprised by how technical Jiu-Jitsu is.\r\n\r\nIt's often described as \"human chess\" because it's all about timing, leverage and problem solving\u2014not brute strength.\r\n

    Step 6: Will I Have to Spar?<\/h2>\r\nProbably not.\r\n\r\nAnd if you do, it will only be when you're ready.\r\n\r\nMany beginners simply drill techniques during their first class.\r\n\r\nIf you do experience live training, you'll be paired with an experienced student who understands you're new and is there to help you learn\u2014not to \"win.\"\r\n

    Step 7: Ask Questions<\/h2>\r\nOne of the best parts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the community.\r\n\r\nEveryone remembers being the new person.\r\n\r\nYou'll quickly discover that higher belts genuinely enjoy helping beginners improve.\r\n\r\nSo ask questions.\r\n\r\nThere are no silly ones.\r\n\r\n(Except maybe, \"Can I skip straight to black belt?\")\r\n

    Step 8: You'll Leave Feeling Accomplished<\/h2>\r\nWill you remember every technique?\r\n\r\nDefinitely not.\r\n\r\nWill you make a few mistakes?\r\n\r\nAbsolutely.\r\n\r\nWill you probably leave with a smile on your face and already be thinking about your next class?\r\n\r\nThere's a very good chance.\r\n\r\nMost people finish their first class saying the same thing...\r\n\r\n\"That wasn't nearly as scary as I expected.\"<\/em>\r\n

    What Should You Bring?<\/h2>\r\nTo make your first class as comfortable as possible, we recommend bringing:\r\n

    • A water bottle<\/li>\r\n \t
    • A towel<\/li>\r\n \t
    • Comfortable clothes to wear under the Gi<\/li>\r\n \t
    • A positive attitude<\/li>\r\n \t
