Why We Don’t Punch or Kick in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | Gracie Barra Hunter Valley
Why Don't We Punch or Kick in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
It's one of the first questions we hear from new students...
"So... when do we learn the punches?"
Our answer?
We don't.
At Gracie Barra Hunter Valley, our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes focus on something very different.
Instead of learning how to hit someone...
We teach you how to control a situation without needing to.
Wait... Isn't It a Martial Art?
Absolutely.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the world's most effective martial arts.
It simply takes a different approach.
Rather than relying on punches and kicks, BJJ teaches students how to:
- Escape from grabs.
- Control an opponent.
- Defend themselves safely.
- Use leverage instead of strength.
- Stay calm under pressure.
It's about solving problems—not creating them.
But What About MMA?
If you've watched the UFC, you've probably seen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu being used.
Here's the important difference...
MMA is a sport that combines many martial arts, including boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Because it's a mixed martial art, striking is part of the rules.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on its own isn't.
Our classes focus on grappling, positioning, escapes and submissions—not punches or kicks.
Think of it like this...
Calling BJJ the same as MMA is a bit like saying swimming is the same as a triathlon.
Swimming is part of it...
But it's not the whole event.
Why Is That Good?
For many people, it's exactly why they choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Learning practical self-defence without being punched in the face every class is a pretty appealing option.
(Your nose will probably agree.)
Because there is no striking in our Gi classes, students can focus on developing technique, timing and confidence in a controlled environment.
Does That Mean It's Easy?
Not even close.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is challenging.
You'll think.
You'll move.
You'll problem solve.
You'll probably end up in some very unusual positions.
(If someone had told you six months ago you'd happily spend your evenings trying to escape from underneath another human, you'd probably have laughed.)
But that's what makes it so enjoyable.
Every class is like solving a puzzle.
Why Parents Love It
Parents often tell us they were relieved to discover that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn't about children punching or kicking each other.
Instead, kids learn:
- Respect.
- Discipline.
- Confidence.
- Body awareness.
- How to work with others.
- Practical self-defence.
They learn how to stay calm rather than react emotionally.
Those lessons are just as valuable in the classroom as they are on the mats.
Self-Defence Without Aggression
One of the biggest lessons we teach isn't how to fight.
It's when not to.
Our goal is to help students develop the confidence to avoid conflict whenever possible.
Real self-defence isn't about proving who's toughest.
It's about making smart decisions, protecting yourself and getting home safely.
So... Why Don't We Punch or Kick?
Because Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers another way.
A way built on:
- Technique.
- Control.
- Leverage.
- Respect.
- Confidence.
It's one of the reasons people of all ages—from young children to adults in their 60s—can enjoy training together.
No black eyes.
No swollen noses.
Just lots of learning, plenty of laughs and occasionally wondering how your training partner somehow tied you in a knot.
Experience the Difference
The best way to understand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn't by watching it on TV.
It's by stepping onto the mats.
Whether you're looking to build confidence, improve your fitness or learn practical self-defence, we'd love to welcome you to Gracie Barra Hunter Valley.
