Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Good for Beginners? | Gracie Barra Hunter Valley
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Good for Beginners? (Spoiler Alert: Absolutely!)
Let's be honest...
If you've never walked into a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy before, you're probably imagining one of two things.
Either:
- a room full of tattooed UFC fighters trying to choke each other unconscious, or
- you'll somehow be expected to fight the instructor on your very first day.
Good news...
Neither of those things happens.
(Unless you're watching too much MMA.)
So... is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really beginner friendly?
Absolutely.
In fact, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) was designed so that someone with little strength or athletic ability could learn to defend themselves using technique, timing and leverage.
At Gracie Barra Hunter Valley, we welcome complete beginners every single week.
Some people are 16.
Some are in their 50s.
Some haven't exercised since high school.
And believe it or not...
Some tell us they're nervous just walking through the front door.
That's perfectly normal.
"But I'm not fit enough."
Here's a little secret...
Nobody gets fit before they start Jiu-Jitsu.
Jiu-Jitsu is what gets you fit.
You don't need six-pack abs.
You don't need amazing cardio.
You don't even need to know your left from your right (although it helps).
You'll simply improve a little every class.
"What if everyone is better than me?"
They will be.
For about a week.
Every black belt started exactly where you are now.
They all remember what it felt like to wear a white belt for the first time.
Nobody expects beginners to know anything.
In fact, asking questions is encouraged.
The only expectation is that you show up and give it a go.
Is it safe?
This is probably the biggest surprise for most people.
Unlike striking martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu doesn't involve punching or kicking.
Instead, you'll learn:
- how to control an opponent
- how to escape bad positions
- how to defend yourself
- how to apply techniques safely under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Training is cooperative.
Your training partner isn't trying to "win."
They're there to help you learn.
What happens in your first class?
Your first class is far less intimidating than most people expect.
We'll:
- greet you when you arrive
- introduce you to your instructor
- loan you a uniform if needed
- explain everything before class starts
- pair you with experienced students who love helping beginners.
No one gets thrown into the deep end.
No one expects perfection.
And no one is keeping score.
Why do so many adults start BJJ?
Everyone has a different reason.
Some want to learn practical self-defence.
Others want to lose weight.
Many simply need an outlet after a stressful day at work.
And plenty of people just want to meet good people and become part of a positive community.
The amazing thing is that Jiu-Jitsu often gives people all of those benefits.
Fair warning...
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can become slightly addictive.
One day you're "just trying one class."
A few months later you're explaining to your family why you need another Gi, why you're watching instructional videos during lunch, and why everyone suddenly has strange nicknames like "Professor" and "Coach."
Don't say we didn't warn you.
